Celebrating 59 Years of Camp Greenleaves: Building an Inclusive Community in Alamance County

One of the greatest joys of local public service is seeing firsthand how community investments transform lives. I had the wonderful opportunity to attend Family Day at Burlington’s Camp Greenleaves alongside Mayor Beth Kennett.

Funded through the Burlington Recreation and Parks Department, this four-week summer program has been a cornerstone of our city for 59 years. It provides a safe, enriching, and joyful environment for children with developmental disabilities across our region. Experiencing Family Day firsthand was a powerful reminder of what local government can achieve when we prioritize care and accessibility:

Creative Camper Performances: Campers took center stage with skits and songs that showcased their hard work, creativity, and joy.
Decades of Connection: We shared lunch with campers, dedicated counselors, parents, and alumni who return year after year to support the program.
Empowering Every Child: Seeing campers thrive in a supportive setting illustrates the lasting value of investing in neighborhood parks and public recreation infrastructure.

Programs like Camp Greenleaves embody the vision at the heart of our campaign: building a truly inclusive community in Alamance County where every resident has a place, a voice, and the opportunity to grow together. When state and local leaders protect public investments in community-driven services, we protect the very soul of our hometowns.

I am already looking forward to celebrating the historic 60th anniversary of this program next summer!
